A weight plate is a type of weight lifting equipment, that used in combination with adjustable barbells or dumbbells (and plate loaded weight machines), add resistance for specific weight training. Usually flat and made of iron (sometimes just partially).
Weight plates (when used with a barbell) make you hold the weight on both hands, allowing you to stabilise the weight better and reaching a heaving lift. On the other hand, with dumbbells, each weight falls into each arm independently, making it harder to stabilise, but giving you more range of motion and also allowing you to lift one arm only.
As mentioned before, weigh plates combined with a barbell allow you to lift heavier because it helps stabilise the balance of the weight and it´s used in competitions. Moreover, because of those heave loads recruiting a bigger number of fibre muscles, it´s crucial for muscle building.
There are many type of weight plates, most important ones being: Olympic Bumper Plates, Steel & Iron Olympic Plates and Change Plates.
