Steve and Shae are the dynamic duo behind a successful family business that transcends fitness. Driven by an entrepreneurial spirit and a love for marketing, they created a thriving community hub where individuals come together, support one another, and strive for personal growth. With their prior experience in the fitness industry, Shae and Steve found the perfect balance between their personal and professional lives, intertwining their passion for fitness with cherished family moments. Their open communication, collaborative decision-making, and unwavering support provide invaluable insights for couples considering venturing into business together. Their story serves as a beacon of inspiration, showcasing the transformative power of building connections and pursuing shared dreams.

1. What inspired Shae and yourself to start your own family gym business?

From a young age, I've had an undeniable entrepreneurial spirit. Even in Year 2, I vividly remember selling my drawings to classmates, making my first 5 cents, with Mary being the first customer I recall. As a teenager, I took advantage of family trips to the Philippines, purchasing hats and belt buckles to sell back in Australia to my friends at school. Simultaneously, while working as a personal trainer, I dabbled in a vending machine business, offering chocolates, chips, and various snacks to eager customers.

What truly captivates me about business is the exhilarating world of marketing. I thrive on the opportunity to explore unique and innovative strategies that connect with our target audience, fuelling my creative instincts.

Being actively involved in the day-to-day operations of a business resonates deeply with me. I relish the hands-on experience of developing programs, creating efficient systems, and meticulously curating an exceptional customer journey.  I find  joy in building a business that is deeply rooted in the community and fosters strong connections with its members. Creating a sense of belonging and actively engaging with the local community is a priority for me. I believe that a successful gym business extends beyond fitness; it becomes a hub where individuals come together, support one another, and collectively strive for personal growth and well-being. By forging these meaningful connections, we can create an inclusive and supportive environment that goes beyond the typical gym experience.

Ultimately, my aspiration is to build a thriving business that ensures financial freedom for my family. By achieving this, we can embrace our dream lifestyle while doing what we love and providing the utmost satisfaction to our customers.

2. Did you both have any prior experience or background in the fitness industry before starting your gym?

I first started training in my garage at home when I was 15. When I turned 16 I joined the gym and as time went on I became more dedicated to my training and goals. In 2014 competed as a teenager in the IFBB where I won the QLD and Australia bodybuilding teenage title. In 2015 stepped into the junior division and as one of the youngest juniors i won IFBB junior QLD and Amateur Olympia title. In 2017, I won the QLD title in the Juniors and placed 5th in the Arnold's Junior Division.

Shae always lived an active lifestyle. Throughout her Junior years she excelled in basketball representing Victoria in basketball and becoming a personal trainer at Hamilton Island after finishing school

3. What strategies do you have in place to maintain a healthy balance between your personal and professional lives as family gym owners and partners?

Although it may appear that our gym and business consume a significant portion of our time, it has become more than just a workplace for us—it's our second home. We have achieved a sense of balance by intertwining our personal and professional lives, seamlessly integrating our passion for fitness with our family life. While we dedicate ample time to the gym, we also prioritise creating cherished moments with our daughters and rejuvenating ourselves through weekend getaways. These moments spent together are invaluable as they provide us with the opportunity to recharge, re-energise, and maintain the harmony between our personal and professional endeavours.

4. How do you handle decision-making processes in your gym business? Are there specific roles or responsibilities each of you take on to avoid conflicts?

Shae and I recognise and appreciate the unique strengths and weaknesses we each bring to the table, and we understand the importance of self-awareness in our partnership. Shae possesses exceptional judgment and expertise in managing people, and I wholeheartedly trust her decisions without hesitation. I remain open to her valuable insights and eagerly embrace the opportunity to learn from her. Our relationship is built on open communication, extending to even the smallest decisions we make in our business.

5. Can you share any tips or advice for other couples who may be considering going into business together?

Embarking on a business venture with your partner is filled with excitement. When your goals and perspectives on business align, it creates a promising foundation for success. However, it's essential to acknowledge that the journey may have its fair share of ups and downs. In those moments of darkness, having a partner who can always see the light and provide unwavering support becomes invaluable, as it helps navigate through challenges and keeps the momentum going.

Maintaining open communication is crucial, especially before making significant decisions. Regularly sharing thoughts, concerns, and ideas ensures that both partners are on the same page and can make informed choices together. By fostering this culture of transparent communication, you can avoid misunderstandings and strengthen your business partnership.

Sharing the workload equally is another key aspect. By distributing responsibilities fairly, both partners can contribute their skills and expertise, leveraging their individual strengths. This not only lightens the load but also promotes a sense of collaboration and unity within the business.

During times when one partner is unwell or facing difficulties, providing ample support becomes paramount. Showing empathy, understanding, and offering assistance can help your partner through challenging periods, demonstrating that you are there for each other beyond the business realm.

By embracing these principles of alignment, communication, shared workload, and support, you lay the groundwork for a successful business partnership with your significant other. Together, you can overcome obstacles, celebrate achievements, and create a thriving enterprise.
